French

The French department aims to:

  • Develop the ability to use a foreign language effectively for the purposes of practical information.
  • Teach pupils to understand the spoken foreign language at a level appropriate to their ability.
  • Encourage and heighten the pupils’ awareness of the structure of language both native and foreign.
  • Foster attitudes of tolerance and understanding and develop worldwide awareness.
  • Develop inter-personal and communication skills through pair work, group work and co-operation within the whole class situation.
  • At the heart of the department's philosophy is the desire to give pupils first-hand experience of culture and language and thus we run trips to Paris for students in Upper School.

"The pupils are highly competent learners who enjoy the subject and are assiduous in their recording of vocabulary and presenting written work. They respect the teacher and each other and their behaviour contributes well to effective learning...Pupils are regularly assessed in vocabulary and grammar skills during the two periods a week so that it ensures that pupil’s progress is monitored well."
