History

In Middle School pupils study Ancient Civilisations, linking them to the Biblical narrative. Topics include The Egyptians and a comparison between Greek and Hebrew culture, Medieval Realms beginning with the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 and the making of the United Kingdom between 1500 - 1750. Students also explore the French Revolution and its impact on ideas of democracy.

Year 9 study 1750 - 1900 - The Industrial Revolution, for which Bradford provides the ideal background. There is much scope for Christian input here with study units on TItus Salt, William Wilberforce, and understanding the birth of the modern world as we know it. Year 9 also study a pre-GCSE unit broadly covering the 20th century in the summer term.

There is much varied and active learning involved in all history lessons, from the archaeological dig in the playground to the preparation of medieval food and the writing of historical fiction. Students are also introduced to the concept of worldview; this is explored through studying the renaissance, the reformation and the enlightenment as well as modern worldviews that will influence the way people think today.

Modern World History is taught at GCSE. The curriculum includes: The Outbreak of the First World War; International Relations between the Wars; The Transformation of British Society during the course of the First World War; Weimar and Nazi Germany and a special study on Vietnam. Extra tutorials take place before school to provide enhanced study sessions and guests are regularly invited into the classroom to speak on various subjects. Educational visits outside of school further enhance learning and stimulate enjoyment in the classroom.
