6/1/2010 - A letter from Mr Moon regarding bad weather
To our parents and pupils,

It would be an understatement to say that the weather is causing some uncertainty at the moment! We are all trying to forward plan. I hope the following helps you with your planning for tomorrow:

I worked in school today. By the end of the day, the roads and out of Bolton Woods were largely clear, with the exception of Livingstone Road, the steep approach to the school. The gritters have not made it up this road, and speaking to the council today, I was informed that grit is running out in the district , and only major bus routes are the priority.

I am also aware that childcare and getting back to work is a priority for many of you having to provide childcare unexpectedly at home. I have emailed colleagues during the day, and we have enough staff to provide supervision at school tomorrow.

Steve Call, our caretaker has worked hard to keep the approaches to the school clear and gritted, so it will be safe once you arrive at school. Our intention is to open the school tomorrow, but please be aware that you may have to park you car safely at the bottom of the hill and walk your children up Livingstone Road to the school. I suggest wellies with indoor shoes and a dry pair of socks in a bag.

Mr Archer, Mr Kewshaw and Mr Heath have taken great initiative with FutureClass, an example of on line technology all GCSE students at the school are familiar with. They have offered very worthwhile tuition to students in Years 10 and 11 today, but only a handful of students have taken up this innovative offer. I highly recommend that if school is closed agin in the near future, that GCSE students work on line with these teachers. This is an imperative for Y11 students a few weeks away from their mocks and a few months away from their final GCSE exams.

Whilst the school should make every effort to always be open, my decision is always tempered by an assessment of the risk involved in staff and pupils getting to and from school. This risk has been unacceptable in the last two days.

However, unless things seriously deteriorate overnight, we shall be open in the morning. Please check the website for a final verdict on tomorrow. We shall post our decision by 7:00 am

Make a personal decision on the risk levels to your family in getting to and from school.

Yours sincerely

P.Moon.
Headteacher.
